Rubber foam parts

#1 Post by Speed Freak » Wed Jan 04, 2017 7:00 pm

Hi,

as already shown im my restoration topic I have made a set of rubber foam parts.
Today I got the first full sample set, on the picture together with the original Yamaha part:
Image

Cut edge is good now, just have to work on the dimension accuracy of the 5mm thick parts. Means I need to go there on a saturday and optimize the cutting process together with the guy who is doing them for me...

Material: Fuel and Oil resistant rubber foam with a strong adhesive on the backside.

Part numbers:
- 1GE-1446R-00 (3,50€/pc) => air filter to carb rings (4 per bike), still available from Yamaha
- 47X-2173M-01 / 47X-2173N-01 (5€/set) => the 2 pieces on the rear of the frame (one of each per bike)
- 29N-21747-00 / 5G3-82126-00 (1€/pc) => pads on the oil tank (one of each per bike)
- The big seal (5€/pc) which seals the air filter case center to the "ears", never available from Yamaha (2 or 4 per bike depending on if you want to remove the rivets or not)
I will also buy some rivets which will work for connecting plastic parts and add 4 of them if needed.

They should be ready for shipping in ~4 weeks, depending on when I will find time for the optimization.
Worldwide shipping is no problem, this parts fit into a cardboard envelope (0,5€) + shipping costs according to http://www.post.at/en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Let me know what you need.
My bikes:

RD350 YPVS 31K 1985
Honda CBR 1000 RR SC57
Yamaha R1 RN04

Hi Speed Freak. Happy new year! I am interested in the - 47X-2173M-01 / 47X-2173N-01 (5€/set) => the 2 pieces on the rear of the frame (one of each per bike) cut outs. Roughly speaking what would the pair be worth? I'm in Ontario, Canada, N0R 1K0.

Thank you.

Hi Speed Freak, two of the big seals and both the frame pieces for me please.

Out of interest have you looked at making the large foam profiles that stick on the outer surface of each air duct.

Regards
Paul

Everything is finished today

Amount of parts which are still available:
- Big air filter case seals: 0, but there is a bit material left over for maybe 4-5pc
- Airbox to carb rings: 8 (2 sets)
- Frame pieces: 7 sets
- Oil tank: 10+

Regarding the big foam pads on the outside of the case I will probably do them as I`m not really happy with mine (they have some chips) but not at the moment.
Will need some time to investigate which material they are and they also need a different cutting method.

Found time to do the shipping stuff today...
All parts which are paid will go out tomorrow, all with registered letters will get a tracking number.

To all who get rivets: Delivery time ~2 weeks.
I will let you know when they are here.

I have ordered another production run of airbox seals (rings and the big seals), will be finished in maybe 2 weeks.

Rivets arrived today and the function of them is perfect.
Before you can pull out the rivets the plastic will break.

Image

One test rivet with head drilled off:
Image

For the riveting process it`s good to have 2 more hands and it shouldn`t be done in the cold garage.
The foam is getting stiffer when it is cold, so I recommend to work at minimum +20°C

First you have to put the foam gasket onto the backside of the funnel.
Then put it onto the outer air filter case and compress the foam (thats why you need 4 hands).
Holding the funnel in place with the compressed seal you can put in the rivets.

It also works without compressing the foam as the rivet is pulling the 2 parts together, but I think there is a small risk that the result is not perfect.

Then please push out the pin of the rivet.

I would not recommend to leave them in the rivet, even if they are not loose.
It`s simply to ensure that they will not fall out later due to vibration.
If this pin is falling out when the bike is running it will directly enter the engine thru the carbs!
There is not much force needed to push them thru, the rivet itself doesn`t get loose.
