Re: Mirrors / Glass Removal
The mirror glass is convex so getting one cut is tricky. I also tried a glass and parts from pattern mirrors, unfortunately flat/wrong shape/badly made. Better bet is to search on ebay for yamaha mirrors from the same era that share the same shape mirror shell and glass. I recall its the FZ or FJ bi...

Re: Mirrors / Glass Removal
I also used a heat gun but on mine you can set the temperature accurately. If you are using a fixed temperature paint stripper type air gun they get up above 400°C and can boil the surface of the plastic if not used with care.

Re: Mirrors / Glass Removal
The loose ones I have seen are loose because the conical shaped bit at the bottom of the knuckle joint has split and needs replacing. You can't buy this part on its own but there are plenty of period yamaha mirrors that can donate the part. Temperature wise its as hot as your naked hands can take. A...

Re: carb : needle valve holding plate (is there one or not ?)
I recently overhauled a set of RZV500 carbs and they did not have holding plates, just screws with a largish head dia. From memory, I think my RD500 carbs were the same. I tried to upload a photo of the RZV's carbs but got a strange error message, sorry.

Re: CDI unit compatibility - RZ to RZV
Hi Gary, welcome to the world of the V4. Just checking it is the CDI we are talking about as I have never heard about them being repaired (hard to get in to do a repair). The power valve controller on the other hand is often repaired/modified. I am still running with standard electronics, but should...

Re: Rear Crank Timing out 2.5 Degrees
Vma500, I think you have missed the main points in my post. They were Smokers question: Is there any measurable performance advantage with this mod, or is it just theoretical? Has any person ever performed a before/after dyno test, or before/after rear cylinder temperature readings? And my comment a...

Re: Rear Crank Timing out 2.5 Degrees
There has been some interesting theories on this but to me Smoker asked a very relevant question that I have not seen answered: His question: Is there any measurable performance advantage with this mod, or is it just theoretical? Has any person ever performed a before/after dyno test, or before/afte...

Re: Oil Pump Check Valve
Godmanchester is a very pleasant riding distance away (when the good weather returns and we are allowed out of our houses), I am down south in Buntingford. Just followed the thread tacky1 added and saw the photos of your bike. Nice bike, think I have its twin. Cant say if its due to the in-line chec...

Re: Oil Pump Check Valve
They are a standard yamaha part that I believe came from fowlers (a few years ago). Sure somebody will chime in with the part number. The valves are nice and compact and I managed to hide them behind the little round rear crank end cover. I didn't actually have a leaking valve, fitted them more as a...

Re: Oil Pump Check Valve
Assuming we are talking about the 2 stroke oil pump there are 4 check valves hidden behinnd each of the brass hose fittings. Be aware the fittings are fragile and can break off when being removed and obviously they are made from unobtainium. Most of us have left the pump alone and fitted in-line che...

Re: Dot 5 Brake fluid
I used a bit of hexagonal bar from ebay and drilled a hole in the middle. It was easy to find it with the correct 14mm AF size in short lengths. The part you identified should work the same as long as their dimensions are correct. My antidives looked similar to your photo but the inside of the hydra...

Re: Dot 5 Brake fluid
I have run dot 5 in my RD350LC brakes for over 15 years without any issues. Never needed to strip these brakes so can't comment on corrosion being better or worse with dot 5 but the paint is still nice  When I rebuilt my RD500 a few years ago I used dot 4 fluid due to reading comments on the I...

Re: Clutch Operating Mechanism / 47x-16340-00
I silver soldered some tangs back on mine and replated the sleeve (have zinc plating kit) and its worked fine. Although I seem to recall that once assembled the operating action keeps the sleeve in the right place and the tangs are mainly for assembly. A reasonable assumption as the bike was in use ...
