Re: No spark at the plugs.

Steve, I tightened up the clearance between the rotor and the pickup until it hit, then backed it up a bit. Unfortunately it didn’t help. I’ve got a new pickup on the way, hopefully that will do it. OK, but worth a try as has worked for some. Frustrating that you have to keep on searching for the c...

Re: No spark at the plugs.

It seems the pick-up coil that senses the flywheel loses its internal magnetism over time. The work-around is to reduce the gap between it and the flywheel ‘tabs’ to around 0.6-0.8mm. I did this and got my sparks back (albeit seem weak as not super-bright blue, but sufficient for the engine to run)....

You are wrong……..
There are varying levels of liquid incompressibility.

Re. DOT 5….
I was under the impression that DOT 5 is more compressible than Dot 3/4, so is not ideal for performance applications.
Any of you guys using it, noticed any detriment, i.e. more lever travel or sponginess?
Maybe I have been mislead all these years….!

Re: My 84 RZ500 Suspension Upgrade

Forget welding your stem! 2 reasons :- 1) It WILL distort and be bent after welding due to the amount of heat aluminium requires to weld. If lucky might only be a few thou (even if pre-heated), but enough to not properly align in the top yoke. 2) T6 means solution heat treated to get the enhanced me...

Re: Rd500 zeeltronic experts

I find that the handhold controller is not very intuitive to use, even with only 3 buttons. However, I managed to add an extra initial point on the ignition curve to fix the backfire issue, specifically 5 degrees of advance at 300rpm. As there are 2 maps available, you can either edit your existing ...

Re: pick up gap

From memory, I removed the dowels securing the outer cover which then allowed some vertical movement. Adding a piece of plastic shim to the flywheel over the raised triggers, thus allows an estimate of the radial clearance. Re. Reducing the gap, I ground down one of the locating ‘dimples’ on one of ...

Re: Mikuni tm28s

Luther, thanks for the detailed reply. Appreciated. I thought it was bad enough just trying to figure out rich/lean, never mind signal strengths! Something else to consider. The bike in question is a YZR replica, and the carbs are VM28-418 (but apparently Mikuni screwed up their part numbering as th...

Re: Mikuni tm28s

Slide cutaway 3.5mm to get rid of hang idle down, slides are expensive and you cant go back Luther, I have an idle that hangs after blipping with these 28mm flat slides too. I assumed the ‘hang’ is due to a lean condition, so am surprised that you have gone from 2.5mm to 3.5mm cutaway, as that is g...

Re: 1984 RZ500 clutch slipping BADLY

To have no drive at all, the plates cannot be compressed by the springs, i.e. be loose. Without the outer cover on you can check this.
I think the outer pressure plate (that the springs push into the springs) has the wrong angular orientation, so is bottoming on the hub.
Just a thought.

Re: Separating the Crankcase

Jeff B is right. I have a motor in the house and I just took a look, and there are a couple of pry point at the front of the cases. Alternatively, a few taps with a rawhide mallet on the crankshafts adjacent to the cases might encourage separation. Just checked again and there is another pry point a...

Re: Engine Bolts 15 & 16

Rather than button heads, I used regular capheads for these 2 bolts.
The larger Allen key hex should make removal easier.
They were a close fit regarding clearance on the increased head height, but on my engine, there was clearance (just).

Think you might mean RGV Steve……
(I’ve never had contact with him, but heard he has ‘retired’ from making bike bits, but maybe wrong…?)
